Career Roles

1. Chartered Accountant

A Chartered Accountant manages the accounts of a business. They file a business's tax return, audit financial statements and offer financial advisory services to clients.

At school level, one can pick up any stream – Humanities, Commerce or Science, however it is recommended to pick up subjects Mathematics and Accountancy. The criteria for marks may vary from college to college, to secure a seat in a top college one must score at least 80% to 85% marks in class 10+2 examinations from a recognised Board.

For Chartered Accountancy, students can take exams as per Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) in India, American Institute of Certified Public Accountants in America and similar regulatory boards in other countries. Depending on their interest and inclinations, Chartered Accountants take up specialisations such as assurance services or risk management (determining the probability of a misstatement on financial documentation). Apart from working in companies, Chartered Accountants may open their private practice and provide services to a wide variety of clients.

2. Consumer/ Retail Banker

Retail/ Consumer Bankers provide services to individual consumers, rather than to companies, corporations or other banks. Services offered include savings and transactional accounts, mortgages, personal loans, debit cards and credit cards.

Bankers are mostly employed with large banking organisations such as Barclays, HSBC, RBS etc. A candidate may join a bank at an entry-level customer service role and work up to management level over a span of a few years.

3. Financial Analyst

Financial Analysts evaluate businesses, projects, budgets and other financial aspects of an organisation to determine their performance and suitability. They examine economic conditions and company policies to make business and sector recommendations.

Financial Analysts focus on assisting clients to make informed decisions about investments. Financial analysts can be employed with banks, pension funds, mutual funds, securities firms, insurance companies and other businesses.

4. Insurance Executive

Insurance Executives sell life, property, casualty, health, automotive or other types of insurance to individual clients and companies. They also manage these insurance policies for their clients, informing them about renewal, expiry, new policies and portfolio management.

5. Investment Banker

Investment Bankers work in a financial institution that is in the business of raising capital for companies, governments and other entities. He/she may also work in a large bank's division that is involved with these activities, often called an investment bank.

6. Stock Broker/ Trader

A Stock Broker/ Trader buys and sells orders for stocks and other securities through a stock market or over the counter, for a fee or commission.

To work as Stock brokers one must be licensed. One platform to obtain the license is to pass the General Securities Representative Examination, also known as the Series 7 Examination. With respect to employment, brokerage firms such Merrill Lynch, JP Morgan and Goldman Sachs often hire stock brokers and provide on-the-job training.
